A Vision of Love Revealed in Sleep. London: printed for the author, to be had also of F.S. Ellis, 1871.
A presentation copy of the first edition of a pioneering work in the history of gay literature: inscribed by the author to the Arts Club. A Vision of Love Revealed in Sleep is a prose-poem allegory by the Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist painter Solomon, taking themes from Jewish and Christian mysticism to express erotic desire between males as aesthetically and morally acceptable. 'The privately printed first edition of Simeon Solomon's prose poem, an attempt to write about desire and sexuality using concepts from Jewish and Christian mystical writings and classical mythology [...] some twenty years before the trials of Oscar Wilde, he dared to express in art his own sexual preferences, however obliquely' (ODNB). 'Expressing the physical and emotional angst of different types of love, Solomon’s text has come to be seen as a paean to same-sex passion at a time when one could not express this kind of love in society' (Simeon Solomon Research Archive). Many of Solomon's friends, including the poet Swinburne, distanced themselves from him following his arrest in 1873 for indecent behaviour in a public lavatory, which destroyed his career.
Quarto (256 x 192). Frontispiece albumen photograph by F. Hollyer of a drawing by Solomon (frontispiece, soiled in margins, coming loose, thumb marks on margins of first few leaves). Publisher’s blue pictorial cloth gilt by Burn & co., their label on rear pastedown (sides with light water-staining and minor soiling, lower corners slightly worn); modern blue morocco-backed case with a semée of gilt stars. Provenance: The Arts Club (inscription in the author’s hand 'For the “Arts” Club' at head of titlepage, bookplate on pastedown and stamp on titlepage) — Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
