Further details
PIERRE REVOIL, BONAPARTE LIBERATING THE CITY OF LYON, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE
This is a compositional study for a painting entitled His Majesty the Emperor’s visit to Lyon, exhibited at the Salon in 1804 and later purchased for the city’s town hall. The canvas was destroyed in 1816 by order of the Préfet du Rhône (Campbell, op. cit., pp. 15-16). The painting commemorated Napoleon’s visit to Lyon on 29 June 1800, after the town had been destroyed in the siege of 1793. The present sheet and two other highly finished drawings – one in the Louvre (inv. RF 41024), the other in the Musée des Beaux- Arts in Lyon (inv. A 3014) – document the appearance of the painting. Napoleon is represented dressed as a Roman general and the city of Lyon is impersonated by a weeping woman seated on the ground among ruins.
