Dutch painter and draughtsman active in Haarlem, Thomas Wijck is known for his Italianate court and interior scenes (see Almsgiving, Phildelphia Museum of Art, inv. cat.611); he is also famous for his depictions of alchemists (see Alchemist in his Study, Rijksmuseum inv. A 489). The subject here is more specifically Dutch - a tavern scene. According to B. Schnackenburg, the drawing dates to the artist's youth, when he was influenced by Adriaen (1610-1685) and Isaac Van Ostade (1621-1649). At that time, he preferred genre scenes and scenes of country life. B. Schnackenburg considers the drawing to be a preparatory sketch for a painting now in private hands (op.cit.).
