Further details
PETER VAN LINT, APOLLO AND MARSYAS, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, SQUARRED WITH BLACK CHALK, MONOGRAMED, INSCRIBED AND DATED 1639
The autograph inscription documents Van Lint's execution of this copy of one of the scenes from the ceiling of Raphael's Stanza della Segnatura during his stay in Rome between around 1633 and 1640/1641. The Flemmish artist probably also copied the three other rectangular compositions on the same ceiling: the one after the Judgement of Solomon is in the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts (inv. 1532; T. Gerszi, 17th-century Dutch and Flemish Drawings in the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts. A complete catalogue, Budapest, 2005, no. 156, ill.), and that of The Fall of Man recently entered the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. 2013.535). Similar in size, technique and signature, these three sheets stand out from other more elaborate drawings made by Van Lint in Rome, executed in black or red chalk and heightened with white chalk, including a series after Raphael's frescoes at the Villa Farnesina (sold at Christie's, Paris, 10 November 1999, lot 328; J. Spicer, Flemish and Dutch Drawings from the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, 2004, no. 67), or copies after the antique, shared between the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris (inv. 5830A, 5830B), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 64.197.8, 64.197.9 and 2006.445) and the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh (inv. RSA 61; C. van Hasselt, Flemish Drawings of the Seventeenth Century, Frits Lugt Collection, Institut Néerlandais, Paris, cat. exp. London, Victoria and Albert Museum, and other venues, 1972, nos. 48, 49).
