Comment voir Toyen ? On plonge, on écoute, on dépasse.
How to speak of Toyen? Each of her works reveals itself as a riddle, with misleading or hidden elements. The viewer feels as if they are entering the artist's imagination, her unconscious, as if each painting were a dreamlike facet, like a piece of a dream painted in the morning. But from these works, only what the artist chooses to reveal emerges.
Solitary, mysterious, Toyen is elusive. At a very young age, she joined the avant-gardes of Prague, a group known as "poetists," which took her to the horizons of lyrical abstraction. Then, in 1926, she founded "Artificialism" with Jindřich Štyrský, where painters turned poets create emotion beyond the visual. Art is an artifice and poetry completes reality; human creates and the painter-poet transcends.
The artist then naturally evolved towards Surrealism; dreams, alchemy, esotericism... these are the themes of the International Surrealist Exhibition in 1947 at the Maeght Gallery, where Toyen exhibited alongside Brauner and Matta. André Breton said, "Beauty will be convulsive or it will not be," and Toyen plays with this beauty in her works, this disturbing, unconscious, irrational beauty. With Dans l'eau du sommeil, where strokes of color glide or jolt across the canvas, the artist presents a painting without any tangible elements to grasp. Are we caught in the wave, the clouds, or the flames? Is it a dream? Is it ours? And yet this blurred vision extends like a horizon, an ode to mystery and silence. In 2002, for the exhibition Les Contrées du Silence at the Ingres Museum, Paul Duchein presented this work as "an oil painting for which I have great fondness."
