URSINIS, Bartholomaeus de (fl. c.1463)
Quadragesimale quod dicitur Gratia Dei. [Naples]: Francesco del Tuppo, for Bernardinus Geraldinus, [not before 1478].
First edition in contemporary binding of a rare compendium of sermons by Batholomaeus de Ursinis, a Franciscan Minorite of whom little is known. The often-missing dedicatory letter is printed as the only page on 1/1.6; in this copy, the sheet is bound so that the letter appears as 1/1v. Chancery folio (291 x 195mm.) 336 leaves, including dedicatory letter missing in some copies, finely illuminated by a contemporary Italian artist, opening page with initial and three-quarter border with white vine decoration, armorial in lower margin, other initials alternating in red and blue (corner of final blank torn; occasional light damp staining, mostly marginal; single wormhole in final leaves). Contemporary Italian calf over wooden boards, sides panelled and tooled with laurel and cross tools, plain spine, remains of two foredge clasps, plain vellum pastedowns, red edges, titled on lower foredges and with number ‘23’ on upper foredges (worn with some loss, upper board detached).
