1851 Heidelberg - 1917 Karlsruhe Gigantenschlacht L. u. signiert. Rücks. und auf der Rahmenrückseite versch. Nummerierungen, auf dem Keilrahmen auf Klebeetikett nummeriert 828/662. Öl auf Lwd. 93 x 77,5 cm. Doubliert. Rest. Rahmen besch. (114 x 98,5 cm). Auf der Rahmenrückseite Klebeetikett "Kunstgewerbl. Werkstätten / Jakob Wörsching / Starnberg vor München". Im Jahre 1877 entstand Wilhelm Trübners erste Fassung der "Gigantenschlacht" (Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, Inv.-Nr. 1006). Unser im gleichen Jahr geschaffenes Gemälde steht mit diesem nicht nur kompositionell, sondern auch hinsichtlich der Maße in engstem Zusammenhang (93 x 78,5 cm). Die heroische Komposition scheint sich Wilhelm Trübner ausgesprochen sorgfältig erarbeitet zu haben, vorbereitende Ölstudien zeugen vom Schaffensprozess (vgl. in jüngerer Vergangenheit die Auktionen Grisebach, Berlin, 30. November 2016, Kat.-Nr. 217 - Karl & Faber, München, 24. Mai 2007, Kat.-Nr. 364). Das vorliegende Gemälde weist nur wenige Abweichungen von der Karlsruher Fassung auf, diese betreffen die Gestaltung des Baumstammes, das Blitzbündel des Göttervaters und die Fußstellung des linken stehenden Giganten in Rückenansicht. Diese enge Nähe zur Karlsruher Erstfassung mag der Grund sein, warum Rohrandt das vorliegende Werk als zweite von fünf Versionen in seinem Werkverzeichnis auflistet. Noch 40 Jahre nach ihrer Entstehung wirkte die vorliegende "Gigantenschlacht" auf die Kunstkenner in spezifischer Form. Anlässlich der "Ausstellung Deutscher Malerei - XIX. und XX. Jahrhundert" im Zürcher Kunsthaus (19. August - 23. September 1917), wo unser Gemälde als "Titanenschlacht" mit Nr. 149 ausgestellt war, äußerte sich ein Rezensent: "[Die Ausstellung] machte auch nebenbei mit dem Trübner bekannt, der, von Böcklin zeitweise verführt, mit weiblichen Zentauren und verliebten Satyrn sich einliess oder gar nach der höchsten mythologischen Dramatik, wie der Feuerbach der "Amazonenschlacht", greifend an einen Titanenkampf sich wagt, bei dem ihn das Anstürmen der Graunüancen, im Rossegefährt des Blitzeschleuderers und in den Wolkenmassen, gegen das Braun und Gelb und Rot der nackten Muskelleiber als Maler wohl am meisten interessierte."
