- Zeng Fanzhi
''The figures I paint function as a mirror that reflects my inner self, and onto whom I have projected my own understanding of the world.'' - Zeng Fanzhi
Ses séries précédentes, The Hospital and Mask, lui avaient apporté une reconnaissance mondiale.
Zeng Fanzhi started the Sky series in 2004. By that time, he was already regarded as one of the most acclaimed Chinese contemporary artists. His previous series, The Hospital and Mask, had brought him worldwide recognition. Through his works, Zeng expresses his truthful emotions and straightforward critique of life in contemporary China. In the Sky series, figures no longer appear wearing masks. Nevertheless, their expressions are still difficult to read as their faces are covered by criss-crossed lines. Thus, Zeng creates an illusion where everything seems quite peaceful under the sky, although the anxiety and unease still remain deep inside our heart.
Sky No.6 was painted in early 2005 and acquired by the Comte and Comtesse Jean-Jacques de Flers, shortly after the completion of the piece, which never left their collection thereafter. The work represents a woman in white with a low ponytail; she is leaning over and gently touching high grass with her right hand. Her rosy cheeks, the yellow halo highlighted on her face, her clothes, as well as the flying grass suggest a warm, breezy day.Right in front of the woman appear chaotic grass stems, featuring Zeng’s most signature backward strokes. These intricate lines in shades of black, blue, red and yellow superimpose one another, adding movement to the work. The blue and white sky dotted with splashes of pink and yellow strokes dominates over two-thirds of the composition. In contrast to the dense and dark grass at the bottom of the painting, the clear and translucent colours of the sky convey an ethereal and harmonious ambiance to this piece.
