Piet Verhaert (1852 - 1908)
Piet Verhaert
Piet Verhaert was a Belgian painter, printmaker, draftsman and teacher.
Verhaert studied sculpture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, but switched to painting and was a member of the Van Beers clique, a group of eccentric young artists. He was later a member of the artists' society Les XX (Society XX) and from 1891 co-founded the group Les XIII (Thirteen).
Verhaert lived in Spain for a time and made many copies of Diego Velázquez paintings, which affected his style. Verhart painted portraits, city views, particularly of the old districts and streets of Antwerp, still lifes and interior domestic scenes, and decorated the Antwerp City Hall with his frescoes.
From 1886, Piet Verhaert was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and co-founder of the Royal Belgian Society of Etching Painters.
