Born around 1734, Brompton honed his artistic skills under the mentorship of Benjamin Wilson and later, in Italy, with Raphael Mengs. His Italian sojourn also brought him under the patronage of the Earl of Northampton, leading to significant exposure and subsequent recognition back in England​.
