Adolph Tidemand
Adolph Tidemand was a Norwegian painter of the 19th century. He is known as a master of domestic and portrait genres and a brilliant representative of Romanticism. Tidemand also wrote many paintings on historical subjects and landscapes with views of his native Scandinavia.
Adolph Tidemand in his work often turned to the realistic style of painting about the life of ordinary Norwegian peasants. His work was highly valued by his contemporaries, a regular customer of the artist was the Crown Prince and later King of Sweden and Norway Oscar II.
Tidemand's biography is closely connected not only with Norway but also with Germany, where he lived a considerable part of his life. In 1869 the artist received the honorary title of professor at the Düsseldorf Academy.
More than 100 paintings by Tidemand are in the collection of the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo.
