Johann Moritz Rugendas was a German painter of the second third of the 19th century. He is known as a painter and graphic artist, a representative of the seventh generation of the famous Rugendas dynasty of artists.
Johann Moritz Rugendas became famous for works depicting the daily life of South America, especially the Indians of Brazil. He is considered the most important European artist to visit Latin America. His method of working was to draw detailed pencil sketches with notes on further coloring, then on this basis created oil paintings. The master worked mainly in two genres - landscape and genre paintings with ethnographic subjects.
