Angkor period

The Angkor period, spanning from the 9th to the 15th century, was the pinnacle of the Khmer Empire's power and cultural development in Cambodia. This era is widely recognized as the classical age of Cambodian history, with its heart located at Angkor, near today's Siem Reap city.

Angkor served as the royal epicenter, from which the Khmer kings governed a vast and flourishing kingdom that extended from the Indochinese Peninsula to modern Yunnan, China, and from Vietnam to the Bay of Bengal. The period saw the construction of monumental temples, most notably Angkor Wat, built by King Suryavarman II in the 12th century, and Angkor Thom, established by King Jayavarman VII about 1200.

This era was marked by significant architectural, cultural, and spiritual advancements. The Angkorian architecture, exemplified by the iconic Angkor Wat, is celebrated for its intricate designs and religious symbolism. The temples, a blend of Hindu and Buddhist influences, are adorned with exquisite bas-reliefs depicting mythological and historical narratives. The hydraulic engineering of the period was also remarkable, with an extensive water management network supporting the region's agriculture and population.

The Angkor period's end is a subject of scholarly debate, but it generally marks the transition from the Khmer Empire's dominance to the Post-Angkor Period of Cambodia. Despite the decline of political power, the artistic and cultural legacies of this period continue to influence Cambodian society and are a source of national pride.

For art and antique collectors, the Angkor period offers a rich tapestry of history and culture. The restored temples, sculptures, and artifacts from this era are treasured in museums worldwide, showcasing the artistic prowess and spiritual depth of the Khmer civilization.
