Further details

A PAIR OF MARBLE BUSTS REPRESENTING A WOMAN AND A MAN, SIGNED BY SERVAIS CARDON (1607-1649), SECOND QUARTER 17TH CENTURY

This pair of busts bears the monogram of Servais Cardon (1607-1649). This latter came from a dynasty of sculptors established in Arras (Atrecht, Spanish Netherlands) at the end of the 16th century. Servais, trained with his brother Jean in their father Forci Cardon's sculpture workshop, joined the Saint-Luc guild in 1628. Of the two brothers, only a small number of works have survived.

Here, the subject of the pair of white marble busts poses a few difficulties ; the pair almost certainly belongs to Greco-Roman mythology - their larger-than-life size, material and typology cannot be explained in any other way - none of the portraits has any recognizable attribute that would allow a figure to be identified. The busts are identical in size and are intended to be displayed on a rectangular pedestal, the top of which is concealed at the front by the drapery. This dynamic can be compared with certain works by Rombout Verhulst (1624-1698).
