Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
Autograph letter signed (‘Richard Wagner’) to [Francesco Lucca], Lucerne 22 May 1871
In French. Two pages, 220 x 143mm, bifolium, Wagner’s embossed monogram at upper left, some sections underlined in blue crayon, ink numbering at upper left.

To the Milanese publisher Francesco Lucca, on the Italian publishing rights for the Kaisermarsch (WWV 104). Wagner is sending Lucca the full score of the piece (not present), and reminds him that he is not able to grant him the German editors’ special copyrights: 'Je vous envoie un exemplaire de la grande partition de la marche de l’Empereur [….]

The Imperial March is one of Wagner’s most patriotic pieces, completed in March 1871 to commemorate the proclamation of Wilhelm I as German Emperor on 18 January of the same year. On 5 May, Wilhelm I attended the piece’s performance at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin, which was conducted by the composer himself. Francesco Lucca (1802-1872) trained in music publishing in Germany before founding his own publishing house in Milan. From 1847 to 1859, Lucca had been the director of the leading musical journal L’Italia musicale, which furthered the importance of works by foreign composers in Italy.
