Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
Autograph letter signed ('Richard Wagner') to [Ferdinand Allesina von Schweitzer, Baden ambassador to Paris], Paris, 9 January 1860
In German. Three pages, 208 x 134mm, bifolium, embossed initials 'R.W.' at upper left corner.

On his attempts to organise concerts in Paris to raise awareness of his compositions. 'I hear from all sides that it will be impossible to get me the hall of the grand opera for my concerts, and that, for many reasons, this hall would even be very disadvantageous to me': he therefore withdraws his request for von Schweitzer's help in arranging this. 'At the same time, I have now received the promise of the director of the Italian Opera for the Salle Ventadour [at the Théâtre Italien] ... I must therefore consider it high time to inform you of this'; he asks von Schweitzer 'to invite the Emperor to attend one of my concerts, the first of which will take place on the 25th of this month. In any case, it is necessarily of great importance to me to make His Majesty favourably inclined towards me, since only in this way can I hope to gain his interest in me and to obtain a later performance of one of my works in the grand opera'.

Wagner had moved to Paris in November 1859 to oversee production of a revision of Tannhäuser. He conducted three concerts comprising excerpts from his works at the Salle Ventadour on 25 January and 1 and 8 February 1860: Napoleon III did in fact grant permission for him to present these at the Paris Opéra, but too late. The staging of Tannhäuser in March of the following year was to be a notable fiasco. Sämtliche Briefe, xii (2001), pp38-39, No. 12 (text substantially but not completely published); WBV 2664.
