Further details
FLEMISH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY, VIEW OF BOCHOLT IN LIMBURG, PEN AND BROWN INK, GREY WASH, INSCRIBED AND DATED 1640
This anonymous Flemish drawing bears the collector's mark of the famous Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694-1774), but does not appear in the catalogue of the sale of the collection in 1775 or in one of the many lots mentioned at the end of the catalogue. From 1912, it attracted the attention of collectors and was reproduced under the name Lucas van Uden in the Muller sale catalogue of that date. The inscription refers to the small town of Bocholt, in Limburg, with the Church of Saint Laurent. The remarkably luminous composition harmoniously combines architectural buildings and depictions of village life with figures and animals.
