Lot 77 | Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
Estimate value
£ 25 000 – 35 000
Autograph manuscript of scientific calculations using gauge terms, n.d. [1920s-30s]
In German. Two pages on a single leaf, 191 x 275mm, one in pencil, one in ink, a few cancellations, the pencilled side annotated 'No 10' in another hand, unwatermarked paper. Provenance: Christie’s 7 June 2000, lot 14; Schøyen Collection, MS 4478.
Einstein pursuing a scientific problem involving alternating series. The page in ink pursues a series of equations relating to a converging alternating series, concluding that they converge badly ('Konvergierende alternierende Reihe. Konvergiert schlecht'); the page in pencil refers to a particular variety of section ('Brucken-Schnitt') and its correspondence with the unit circle ('Einheitskreis'). The precise nature of the calculations remains undetermined. Einstein was an inveterate recycler of paper, and it is possible that the calculations on the two sides are unrelated.
