Further details

ANNE-LOUIS GIRODET DE ROUCY-TRIOSON, IARBAS ASKS JUPITER TO KEEP AENEAS AWAY FROM HIS BELOVED DIDO, GRAPHITE

This scene depicts the love story of Dido and Aeneas as recounted in Virgil’s Aeneid, in particular the shocking moment when King Iarbas, seeking to marry Dido, asks Jupiter to send Aeneas away. The god accepts the request and sends Mercury to Carthage to remind Aeneas of his destiny in Italy (book IV, verses 173-218). This design to illustrate the Aeneid kept Girodet busy from 1811 until his death, producing around 170 drawings. The present sheet is not among the 78 drawings lithographed around 1825. Of a total of eighteen drawings illustrating the Aeneid’s fourth book known from the 1867 sale (see Provenance), four sheets are today in the Rijksmuseum (inv. RP-T-1952-88 to RP-T-1952-91; see R.-J. te Rijdt, De Watteau à Ingres. Dessins français du XVIIIe siècle du Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, exhib. cat., Paris, Institut néerlandais, and Amsterdam, Rijksprentenkabinet, 2003, pp. 257-259), and one in the Musée Girodet in Montargis (inv. 71-29).
