This drawing served as the model for the frontispiece of François Nöel’s Dictionnaire la fable, published in 1801 (Girodet 1767-1824, exhib. cat., Paris, Musée du Louvre, 2005, p. 63). The artist participated in the editorial work of the publication, as well as of its later editions. Noël and Girodet were close to the group of ‘ideologues’ of the journal Décade philosophique. Above all, the two men shared a vision of the coexistence in modern times of science and antique myth Antiquity. According to them, an allegorical approach to fables enabled the representation of nature through poetic discourse.
