ANTOINE-PIERRE MONGIN, LANDSCAPE WITH HENRY THROWING HIMSELF AT BOWSEY, WEVIL'S ASSASSIN, BODYCOLOUR ON PAPER LAID DOWN ON CANVAS, SIGNED AND DATED 1798
Typical of the large landscapes painted in shades of blue by this pupil of Gabriel-François Doyen (1726-1785), this gouache on paper, mounted on canvas and stretchered like a painting, was exhibited by Mongin at the Salon of 1798. The subject, completely original in the artist's work, presents, as the Salon booklet states, an episode from the novel Henry (Volume I) written by the British playwright and novelist Richard Cumberland (1732-1811). As is Mongin's usual style, the landscape takes centre stage, with the slightly undulating terrain filled with trees occupying the entire composition, while the scene in the centre of the clearing remains anecdotal: Bowsey, a friend of Henry, the hero of the novel, has just stabbed Weevil, a young miller, and robbed him of his purse. Weevil is lying on the ground when Henry arrives. Henry pounces on Weevil to try to stop and disarm him.
In addition to his large gouache landscapes exhibited at the Salon between 1791 and 1822, Mougin worked in collaboration with several manufacturers, including Jean Zuber (1773-1852) in Mulhouse, to create panoramic decorations and wallpapers.
