Further details

A TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A BATHER, LATE 19TH CENTURY OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY

This delicate Bathing Girl bears witness to the dexterity needed when modelling clay. A fundamental stage in the artistic process, this sketch both crystallises a wish and suggests a goal. Through a few flat areas of clay, still bearing the traces of the sculptor’s gestures and fingerprints, a movement and a pose are outlined, suggesting that the woman is sitting on a ledge and letting her legs rest in the water.
The mysteries of its author and its destination remain unresolved. Yet, one can sense in the modeling and the theme, the influence of Edgar Degas’s generation.
