ARISTOTLE (384-322 B.C.)
Problemata. Translated by Bartholomew of Messina (fl. 1258-1266) and with commentary by Pietro d’Abano (c. 1257-1316). Mantua: Paulus de Butzbach, 1475.
First edition of Aristotle’s Problemata in the medieval translation by Bartholomew of Messina, with commentary by Pietro d’Abano. A very large example of a rare edition: RBH records no copies at auction. The Problemata are ‘a collection of more or less randomly assembled questions and answers on a wide variety of scientific and quasi-scientific topics, including physiology, psychology, medicine, cosmology, mathematics, music, and ethics’ (Siraisi). The commentary by Pietro d’Abano, reputed to be one of the most learned men of his time, was completed at Padua in 1310 and brings together ‘the most advanced scientific knowledge of the early fourteenth century’. ‘In his preface he stated that the Problemata contained hidden things from nearly every art and science, together with almost all philosophy in abbreviated form, and could be understood only by those who had studied philosophy in all its branches’. H 16*; GW M31865; Goff P-436; BSB-Ink P-313; Bod-inc P-193; ISTC ia01044350; Nancy G. Siraisi, ‘The Expositio Problematum Aristotelis of Peter of Abano’. In: Isis, Vol. 61, No. 3 (Autumn, 1970).

Royal folio (423 x 279mm). 300 leaves (complete with the three blanks *1 and K9-10). Printed in double column, initial spaces. 18th-century red half morocco over blue marbled boards, green morocco lettering pieces gilt, gilt arms to covers (extremities somewhat rubbed, short split at head of spine). Provenance: Doria family, counts of Montaldeo, engraved armorial bookplates of ‘Johannis Caroli de Auria ex comitibus Montis Aldei’ and ‘Georgij et Ambrosii de Auria, marchionum Montis Aldei’ – by descent.
