Lot 123 | BIBLE
Estimate value
£ 12 000 – 18 000
Biblia latina. With additions by Menardus Monachus. [Nuremberg: Johann Sensenschmidt and Andreas Frisner], 1476.
A handsome edition of the Latin Vulgate Bible printed at Nuremberg. Some earlier bibliographies cite the Interpretationes hebraicorum nominum as integral to the edition but the fact that it survives independently and appended to other editions, shows that it was a separate work. Indeed, the majority of copies of the 1476 Latin Bible do not include it, as here. Goff B-546; HC 3062*; GW 4221; CIBN B-381; BMC II 408; Bod-inc B-255; BSB-Ink B-423; ISTC ib00546000.
Royal folio (367 x 270mm). 394 (of 396, without first and last blank) leaves. Incipit printed in black (not red, as some copies [GW Anm.]), rubricated, some contemporary quiring and catch-words from quire 23, some pinholes preserved (occasional light marginal dampstain, a little staining in one leaf). 17th-century pasteboard covered with segments of early blindstamped calf, spine painted pale grey with shelfmark at foot, blue edges (leather worn); modern chemise of red pigskin, modern leather ties, metal lower edge-piece. Provenance: annotations in several hands – William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister (1808-1898; Hawarden Castle library label) – by descent to the present owner.
