Further details
CARLE VAN LOO, PORTRAIT OF A DRAFTMAN, HALF-LENGTH, RED AND BLACK CHALK, SIGNED
Member of a dynasty of Dutch painters who settled in the south of France, Carle Van Loo did not restrict his career to his home town of Nice. After being trained by his brother Jean-Baptiste Van Loo (1684-1745) and after several stays in Italy, he was elected to the Académie in 1734, where he was appointed professor in 1737. He went on to become governor of the Ecole Royale des Elèves Protégés in 1748, and was promoted Premier Peintre du Roi in 1762 (preceding the no less famous François Boucher(1703-1770)).
‘Van Loo favoured red chalk above other media, which he applied lightly with a sure hand, in a single stroke”, notes Pierre Rosenberg (in M.-C. Sahut, Carle Vanloo, premier peintre du roi (Nice, 1705-Paris, 1765), cat. exp., Nice, 1977, p.15). It is precisely this confident line, with its regular red chalk hatching, that can be seen in this particularly meticulous drawing, which skillfully plays with light. The same hatching and delicate treatment can be seen in other portraits by the same artist : A man seated in an interior, 1743, Kansas City Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, inv. 32-193/1 and Portraits of Msses Berthelin de Neuville, 1743, Musée du Louvre, inv. RF 38801 (see L.-A. Prat, Le dessin français au XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 2017, p. 206 and 207).
It should be noted that the drawing was part of the collection of the Marquis Jean de Bailleul (c.1855-c.1930), which was auctioned off in 1926. Over his lifetime the Norman connoisseur acquired an impressive collection of drawings by the greatest European masters, from Schongauer to Watteau, via Vasari, Rubens, Van Dyck, Chardin and Fragonard. The present drawing undoubtedly occupied a special place amongst other great works.
