JEAN-HONORÉ FRAGONARD, THE CRUCIFIXION OF SAINT ANDRÉ, AFTER MATTIA PRETI, GRAPHITE, BRUSH, BROWN WASH, LOCATED AND DATED 1774
After a period studying at the Académie de France in Rome (1756-1761), Fragonard acted as guide for the Bergeret family on a tour of Europe between October 1773 and September 1774, which included extended travel in Italy. All the Roman stages of this journey are known thanks to the diary kept by the banker Pierre-Jacques-Onésyme Bergeret de Grancourt (1715-1785), treasurer of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis, a great art lover and patron. His entry for Thursday 9 December reads, ‘The church of Sant'Andrea della Valle. Behind the high altar, three frescoed paintings of the martyrdom and death of Saint Andrew by Calabrese. It would be worth seeing more than once, beautiful design and colour' (Wilhem, op. cit.). The present brown wash drawing copies one of the three frescoes by Mattia Preti, known as Il Calabrese, which the group so admired: The Crucifixion. The artist's two other drawings after the frescoes are The Martyrdom of Saint Andrew attached to his cross from the former Guerrand Hermès collection, which recently reappeared on the market (Sotheby's sale, Paris, 13 December 2023, lot 32) and The Entombment of Jesus offered for sale by Christie's in Paris on 22 November 2024 (lot 119, online sale).
After Italy, the group continued their journey in Northern Europe through Vienna and Prague and, in August 1774, Fragonard was once again able to copy a work by Preti, this time in Dresden. The painting in question was The Liberation of Saint Peter, now in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Narbonne (Fragonard et le voyage en Italie 1773-1774. Les Bergeret, une famille de mécènes, exhib. cat., 2001-2002, p. 53, ill). Again, Fragonard chose to employ pen and wash in a subtle shade of brown to capture the Italian artist's work.
