Further details
CHARLES DE LA FOSSE, CORNER OF A CEILING WITH FIGURES HOLDING SWAGS BETWEEN PUTTI FLANKING A COAT OF ARMS SURMOUNTED WITH A CORONET (RECTO), CORNER OF A CEILING WITH MINERVA (VERSO), BLACK AND RED CHALK, PARTLY INCISED FOR TRANSFER, WATERMARK
Previously given to Charles Le Brun, this double-sided sheet is now recognised as the work of Le Brun’s pupil La Fosse. Stylistically, the drawing can be compared with other studies for ceiling decorations by the artist, such as a sheet from the collection of the Marquis de Chennevières, now in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (inv. 1985.37; see J. Bean, 15th-18th Century French Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1986, no. 143, ill.). Although it is not known for what decorative program this study was made, Peter Fuhring has tentatively suggested that the Marquis de Louvois, for whom La Fosse worked, could have commissioned the design, given the presence, among the decorative details, of a marquis’s crown (op. cit., p. 283).
