CHARLES GLEYRE, MINERVA, RED, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER, SIGNED
Minerva, goddess of arts and crafts, is haloed by luminous rays and plays the flute as patroness of the arts. This drawing is related to Minerva and the Three Graces (fig. 1), a canvas commissioned from Gleyre in 1866 by the businessman Vincent Dubochet (1793-1877) for his château in Crêtes in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland (Lausanne, Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts, inv. 1388; see W. Hauptman, Charles Gleyre 1806-1874. Catalogue raisonné, Zürich, Princeton and Basle, 1996, II, no. 872, pp. 468-476). The present drawing shows the culmination of the artist’s research and his concern for graphic accuracy in his preparatory work. Alexandre Denuelle, in charge of the interior decorations of the Château de Crêtes and a close friend of Gleyre, probably received this drawing at the artist's death, and it remained in the Denuelle family until the beginning of the 21st century.
