LÉON-AUGUSTIN LHERMITTE, THE TILLING, BLACK CHALK, SIGNED
Lhermitte made this drawing in November 1886 for a series of 128 charcoal studies intended as illustrations for La Vie rustique, a book by the poet and novelist André Theuriet, published in 1888. The commission was originally given to Jules Bastien-Lepage, who died prematurely in 1884. Theuriet’s work and Lhermitte’s illustrations accurately describe peasant life in the second half of the 19th Century in France, paying tribute to the rural world in the face of industrialisation and the modernisation of agricultural life. The composition of this sheet derives from another charcoal drawing made by Lhermitte to illustrate the month of March in Le Monde illustré of 1885 (M. Le Pelley Fonteny, Léon Augustin Lhermitte (1844-1925): Catalogue raisonné, Paris, 1991, no. 745, ill.). Both drawings were executed by the artist at the farm of Ru Chailly in the village of Fossoy in Picardy. Lhermitte used this same composition for Le Labourage, a painting exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1911 (Le Pelley Fonteny, op. cit., 1991, no. 211, ill.).
