Further details
‘Yesterday... I found the 12 good bottles you sent me. I thank you for this kind thought with the aim of making me happy. It is obviously very pleasant for me, who used to drink nothing but water (a drunkard's oath, for he who drinks will drink, as the saying goes). So I am going to give up the sadness that comes with drinking water. Where is the wisdom in that? ‘Wine is good,’ said Leonardo da Vinci, ’but when sitting at the table, water is preferable’. The question remains unanswered, because the determined sober people ultimately one day fall into total dipsomania, like the sad end of Edgar Poe, whereas Rimbaud, who drank so much absinth with Verlaine, then became supernaturally sober in the East, which did not work out for him either.’ Letter to Alice, 17 December 1962.
