Further details
‘This painting derives from a dream. The procession goes past a gallery of paintings called Rimbot because the poet Rimbaud once said he liked silly paintings. The painting in the window illustrates Cézanne's wit: when asked what he was going to showcase at one of the annual Salons, he had replied ‘a pot of shit’. On the far right, a participant is holding my palette. I gave myself the national honours. All the priests, bishops, archbishops and maids are attending my funeral.... Ha! Ha! In short, it is a comedy show! We go past a house that says ‘Deuil immédiat’ (‘Immediate mourning’)... And then next door there is a gallery of paintings with the sign ‘Peintures idiotes’ (‘Silly paintings’)’.
