CROWLEY, Aleister (1875-1947)
Songs of the Spirit. London: Chiswick Press for Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., 1898.
Presentation copy of the first trade edition: one of 300 copies. Songs of the Spirit, published when the author was just 22 years old, is one of Crowley’s important early works, showing his artistic development during his time at Cambridge. This collection blends traditional lyricism with unconventional undertones, foreshadowing Crowley’s later avant-garde and occult inclinations, and embodies the fin de siècle fascination with individuality and the exploration of artistic boundaries.

Octavo (160 x 92mm). Half-title (occasional unobtrusive scattered spotting). Original cloth (faint soiling, spine slightly dulled, tiny patch of uneven discolouration on front cover); contained in a modern morocco-backed clamshell box. Provenance: Charles Rosher (poet and contemporary of Crowley; authorial presentation inscription on flyleaf) – minor pencil annotation to pp.10, 11, 23, 103 and 107.
