[CROWLEY, Aleister] (1875-1947)
Carmen Saeculare, by St. E. A. of M. and S. [London: Kegan Paul], 1901.
A fine first edition: one of six copies printed on vellum. The work is dedicated to the 'Countess of Glenstrae' or Moina Mathers, who, with her husband, was one of the founders of the celebrated British occult group, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. It is a work of Crowley's early poetry, published under the pseudonym of St. E. A. of M. and S., comprising Prologue, The Exile, Carmen Saeculare, In the Hour Before Revolt, and an Epilogue To the American People on the Anniversary of their Independence. Crowley was disappointed with Kegan Paul's management of his book sales and closed his account with them in May of 1904; they had only managed to sell five copies of the work. Crowley's personal vellum copy, also bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, is held in the Gerald J. Yorke collection of the Warburg Institute. According to Crowley's first bibliographer, Duncombe-Jewell, this edition was limited to 450 copies with 6 copies printed on vellum and 50 copies on handmade paper. Crowley stated that the work was written as the result of a prophetic vision.

Large quarto (270 x 208mm). Printed on vellum. Contemporary dark blue morocco, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, blue watered silk endpapers, spine with raised bands, title and author gilt, ‘1905’ gilt in lower compartment, untrimmed. Provenance: Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
