DANIEL DUMONSTIER, PORTRAIT OF ALEXANDRE D’HALLWIN, BLACK AND RED CHALK, COLOR CHALKS, STUMPING, WITH INSCRIPTIONS
The sitter is the son of Charles-Maximilien d’Hallwin, lord of Wailly and Namps, governor of Rue, who was born around 1570 and died in Nancy in 1630. In 1595 in Paris, he married Catherine du Gué, lady of Lully. Alexandre was their only son, who married in Nancy in 1633 Yolande Barbe de Bassompierre, daughter of the Baron de Bassompierre, gentilhomme ordinaire de la Chambre du Roi. They had only one daughter, Josèphe-Barbe, who married Ferdinand-François-Joseph de Croy, Prince of the Empire and Grand Duke of Spain, and left him seigneuries of Wailly, Hames and Sangatte.
