Further details
GEORGES LALLEMAND, THE RAT CATCHER, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK
First published in 1950 by François Georges Pariset as a work by Jacques Bellange, the art historian revisited this opinion four years later, citing the drawing in his seminal article on Lallemand (see Literature). In the latter publication, he discusses the stylistic differences between the two artists from Lorraine, and stresses the importance of the black chalk underdrawing in Lallemand’s work, on top of which some outlines are strengthened with pen and brown ink. Indeed, the same eye shape and gaze can be found on other sheets, including two in the Musée du Louvre (inv. 43256, 21768; see L'Art en Lorraine au temps de Jacques Callot, exhib. cat., Nancy, Musée des Beaux-Arts, 1993, p. 272, fig. 2, no. 54, ill.). The latter was engraved by Ludolph Büsinck with the inscription ‘G Lalleman:/ M. Büsinck. Scul:/ 1623’.
