Alongside his work as a painter of the court and bourgeoisie of the period, working for the Duc d'Aumale in Chantilly and the Rothschild family in Ferrières, Eugène Lami also designed costumes for the Paris Opera and illustrated operas and plays, as in this case. This gouache depicts Queen Margot in a scene from Les Huguenots, an opera by Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864) first performed in 1836. It recounts the impossible love between a Catholic woman and a Protestant man on the eve of the St Bartholomew's Day massacres in the summer of 1572. Here, the Queen sits under an arbour with caryatids in a flourishing garden.

Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
