Further details
FRANÇOIS DE TROY, PORTRAIT OF COLBERT DE TORCY, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER
Born in Toulouse and admitted to the Académie de peinture as an history painter in 1674, the present drawing is a preparatory work by Jean-François de Troy, with important variants, for the Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Marquis de Torcy, as Chancellor of the Order of the Holy Spirit, executed around 1701-1705 and now in the Musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon (inv. MV 7915; François de Troy 1645-1730, exhib. cat., Toulouse, Musée Paul-Dupuy, 1997, p. 148, no. 34 ). The son of Colbert de Croissy and nephew of the great Colbert, Torcy had a particularly distinguished diplomatic career. He was Chancellor of the Order of the Holy Spirit from 1701 to 1716 and is shown here in his official attire: a black velvet greatcoat with gold and silver embroidery and holding the ledger of the statutes of the Order in his custody. There are two other drawings by François de Troy on light brown paper in a private collection, which are very similar for a portrait of a chancellor of the Holy Spirit, probably the same person (ibid., 1997, p. 189, nos. 35 and 36, ill. p. 149).
