Further details
FRENCH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY, PORTRAIT OF MARQUIS AND COMTE CHARLES DE ROSTAING, PENA AND BROWN INK, GREY WASH, INCIZED OUTLINES
This drawing was used as a model for one of the fifteen engravings by Jean Lepautre (1618-1682) to illustrate Henri Chesneau's book Trophées médalliques des seigneurs de Rostaing. Dediez au grand Charles marquis et comte de Rostaing, published in Paris in 1661. The bas-relief decorating the underside of the window and depicting Diana at rest is directly inspired by the print (1638) by Michel Dorigny (1616-1665) based on the composition painted by Simon Vouet (1590-1649) in 1637 (British Museum, inv. 1841,1211.39.110). It should be noted that the landscape visible through the window is different from the one chosen by Lepautre: the drawing shows the assault on a fortress, whereas the engraver finally depicted a battle on the plain. This change is undoubtedly due to the fact that Jean de Rostaing (circa 1480-1549) distinguished himself at the bataille de Marignan (1515), which was not a siege battle but a pitched battle on the outskirts of Milan (fig 1).
