Superbe exemplaire, à toutes marges, de l’édition originale en premier tirage, sans le nom de l’auteur sur les couvertures et sans mention de la tomaison sur les faux-titres.
L’exemplaire présente des couvertures de couleur beige ; cette couleur n'est pas mentionnée par Carteret qui indique uniquement des couvertures jaunes. Commencé en décembre 1830, et terminé en janvier 1831, le livre parut le 16 mars de la même année. C'est le premier grand roman de Hugo, écrit à l'âge de 28 ans, qui connut un succès immédiat. "Édition tirée à 1,100 exemplaires en 4 tranches fictives, les trois dernières portant les mentions [d'édition]. Les exemplaires sans mention d’édition et sans nom d’auteur sont fort rares” (Clouzot). "Cette œuvre, éminemment représentative du romantisme, est le récit 'gothique' par excellence où revit le fascinant et pittoresque du Moyen Âge, avec pour centre la cathédrale, dont les ombres et les lumières fantastiques se détachent au clair de lune... Dans Notre-Dame de Paris, Hugo parvient à donner corps et âme aux gigantesques visions de son esprit" (Laffont-Bompiani).

2 vol. in-8 (216 x 134 mm). Édition originale, premier tirage. Vignettes des pages de titre représentant Esmeralda offrant de l'eau à Quasimodo (t. I) et L'amende honorable (t. II). Avec les faux-titre sans mention de tomaison. La vignette de la couverture présente Quasimodo grimaçant à la lucarne de la grande salle du palais.
Reliure de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle : demi-maroquin ébène à coins, dos lisse avec encadrement dorés, gardes de papier marbré, couvertures originales imprimées sur papier beige conservées (couvertures restaurées et doublées).
