Post lot text JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET CALLED FRANCISQUE MILLET, SHEPHERDS IN AN IMAGINARY ITALIAN LANDSCAPE, OIL ON CANVASThe œuvre of Francisque Millet (1642-1679) mirrors his life; born in Antwerp but of French origins, Millet’s work reflects this dual influence, with on one side the Flemish landscape painter Abraham Genoels (1640-1723), who accompanied Millet during a trip to Holland, and on the other the French painter Nicolas Poussin (1641-1665), whose later works came to redefine the importance attributed to the classical landscape. Théodore’s (1660-?) engravings allow us to get a clear sense of Millet’s oeuvre. Namely, his landscapes utilize a high point of view which creates a plunging view over vast horizons, in a manner that is reminiscent of Poussin’s grandiose and heroic landscapes. In our painting, we can see, far along to the left, a classical town towards which is headed a cowherd and his drove of cows. The same compositional elements can be found in a picture brought to market by Christie’s on the 7th of July 1995, lot 74, titled A classical Landscape with Roman Merchants on a Path, a hill town beyond, as well as in another composition depicting the Flight into Egypt, today in a private collection.
