JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET, A RECLINING WOMAN IN A WOODED LANDSCAPE, BLACK CHALK

From the end of the 1840s, Millet produced a number of paintings and drawings related to the female nude, intended for sale. There are approximately thirty-five small-scale paintings of nude women in a bucolic landscape by Millet, such as Reclining Woman in a Landscape of 1846 (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts, inv. 17.1481). The present drawing belongs to a group of charcoal sheets of female nudes, dated circa 1845-1850. Stylistically comparable drawings are at the Louvre, such as a Study of a bather (inv. RF 11361), and a woman putting on her shirt (inv. RF 4163). The figure playing music in the background lends a mythological aspect to this bucolic scene (R. L. Herbert, Jean-François Millet, exhib. cat., London, Arts Council, 1976, p. 111).
