Post lot text JEAN-LOUIS ANDRÉ THÉODORE GERICAULT, LANCIER FROM THE 1ER RÉGIMENT DE CHEVAU-LÉGERS-LANCIERS DE LA GARDE, CALLED POLONAIS, OIL ON CANVASPassionate about horses from a young age, Théodore Gericault (1791-1824) joins Carle Vernet’s (1758-1836) studio in 1808, as Vernet was by then a well-established painter known for his equestrian and military scenes. He had been given the légion d’honneur by Napoléon I (1769-1821) for his painting Le matin de la bataille d’Austerlitz (Versailles, musées des châteaux de Versailles et du Trianon, inv. MV 1550), exhibited in the 1808 Salon. During that time, Gericault discovers, and assiduously copies, the Flemish and Italian pictures, notably Rubens (1577-1640) and Van Dyck (1599-1641), amassed by the emperor and displayed in the musée Napoléon. It is his taste for the material and sensual, developed through close study of these Flemish masters, that earns him the sobriquet ‘Rubens’ cook’ amongst his fellow students. A precocious talent, Gericault quickly gains public and critical recognition for his military subjects. In 1812, aged 21, he receives the gold medal in the Salon for his Officier de chasseurs à cheval de la garde impériale chargeant, currently in the Louvre (inv. INV 4885). Two years later, he exhibits Cuirassier blessé quittant le feu (Paris, musée du Louvre, inv. INV 4886) at the Salon. Germain Bazin (1901-1990) dates our painting to the same period as the two aforementioned pictures. We can thus link our painting, stylistically, thematically and chronologically, to a series of pictures executed in the beginning of the 1810’s, which include Trompette du 2e regiment de chevau-léger-lanciers en tenue de gala (Glasgow, Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum, inv. 35⁄270) and the esquisse pour l’Officier de chasseurs à cheval de la garde impériale chargeant (Paris, musée du Louvre, inv. RF 210) (G. Bazin, op. cit., p. 44). These paintings elude easy classification; they are not portraits, genre scenes or history paintings. Whilst Gericault considered them unsuitable to be exhibited, Eitner reminds us that these compositions are too finished, through their meticulous execution, to be treated as simple studies (L. Eitner, Géricault. His life and work, p. 43). The rigor and accuracy with which the uniform is rendered is a key feature of Gericault’s oeuvre and betrays the influence that Vernet, an active participant in the reforms of the Napoleonic army’s uniforms, had on his student. At the behest of the Bourcier commission, Vernet had realized a series of 244 gouaches representing an officer and soldier for every ‘armes’, or subdivision, of the Armée de Ligne, itself a subdivision of the Grande Armée (F. Lacaille, Uniformes Napoléoniens, Paris, 2001, p. 6). As with our painting, these gouaches contain no symbolic or anecdotal elements and place very little emphasis on the model, thus making the military uniform the focal point of the picture. This precision in the representation of the uniform allows us to identify our soldier as belonging to the 1st regiment of chevau-léger-lancier of the Imperial guard. According to Bazin, his kurtka, the double breasted jacket adorned with aiguillettes on the left shoulder and an epaulette on the right shoulder- attributes of all the chevau-léger regiments- is in fact blue, but appears red as a result of the lapel being buttoned on the left (Bazin, op. cit., p. 168). It is this confusion as to the colour of the kurtka which has resulted in our model being erroneously referred to as the red lancer, a title reserved to the 2nd regiment of chevau-léger-lancier. Our soldier, who is not an officer, as he sometimes is described, is in campaign dress wearing dark blue trousers with a red piped trim (Bazin, op. cit., p. 46). Our picture is not just historic documentation of Napoleon I’s armies, its distinguished provenance testifies also to its artistic merits : mentioned in the painter Eugène Delacroix’s (1798-1873) post-mortem inventory, it then enters the collection of prince Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (1856-1879), son of the emperor (1808-1873), before becoming a part of the part of the prestigious Rothschild collection.
