Post lot text JEAN-LOUIS-ANDRÉ-THÉODORE GERICAULT, THE ATTACKED CUIRASSIER, RED CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INKAttacked by a band of infantrymen, the cuirassier, probably Russian, is depicted on his prancing horse as he grabs the rifle of one of the two French infantrymen (Bazin, op. cit.). According to Bazin, these battles are mostly the fruit of Gericault's imagination, with the French party fighting in turn against Asians, Russians or other Europeans. The pen and brown ink treatment is softened by a light and skilful underlying red chalk sketch which allows Gericault to place the composition in a few quick strokes of chalk. Alexandre Colin also made a pen-and-ink tracing of this composition, which was included in his sale after his death at the Hôtel Drouot on 8-9 February 1876, part of lot 30 (Bazin, op. cit., III, p. 211). We thank Philippe Grunchec for confirming the attribution after visual examination of the work.
