Further details
Joaquim Tenreiro was born into a family of carpentry craftsmen, and moved from Portugal to Brazil in 1928 at the age of 22. After apprenticing with traditional furniture makers such as Leandro Martins and Laubisch & Hirth, Tenreiro founded his own workshop in 1940, focusing on a modern aesthetic. The artist moved away from the imitation of conservative furniture shapes to encompass an up-to-date, European-influenced style.
The impressive dining room table presented here, with its ten slender armchairs, illustrates the perfect harmony of volumes and the high quality of the artist's workmanship.
Nothing is left to happenstance, and the choice of materials is carefully thought out, with the emphasis on the use of sophisticated local exotic woods such as rosewood. The use of partially painted glass and wickerwork creates a play of light and transparency, introducing, according to Tenreiro: “a principle to which (...) modern Brazilian furniture had to adhere: lightness.”
A veritable bridge between traditional craftsmanship and refined modernity, Tenreiro is considered the founding father of Brazilian design. Thus, he contributes to its influence on the international art scene. Thus, this collection perfectly illustrates the rediscovery of a design featuring unique qualities: airy furniture with sensual lines.
