Post lot text

LOUIS WELDEN HAWKINS, A YOUNG GIRL IN PROFILE WEARING A RED HEARDRESS, GRAPHITE, WATERCOLOUR, HEIGHTENED WITH ARABIC GUM, SIGNED

Arriving in Paris in 1870 at the age of twenty-one, Hawkins trained with William Bouguereau and Jules Lefebvre at the Académie Julian, before following the courses of Gustave Boulanger at the Beaux-Arts de Paris (L. Bonekamp, Louis Welden Hawkins, 1949-1910, exhib. cat., Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum, 1993, pp. 7-10). Within Hawkins’ artistic production, the female figure holds an important place (for an overview, see C. Convert, La Figure féminine dans l’œuvre de Louis Welden Hawkins (1849-1910), MA thesis, Paris, École du Louvre, 2017, p. 75). A certain melancholy emanates from this portrait of a young girl. Hawkins seems most interested in the representation of textiles, and more particularly in the red hat, the central element of the composition.
