MARULLUS, Michael (1453-1500)
Epigrammatum libri IV. Hymnorum naturalium libri IV. Florence: Societas Colubris (Compagnia del Drago), 26 November 1497.
The Borghese library copy of the second edition of the epigrams and first edition of the Hymni naturales by Marullus: ‘Superbe exemplaire de cette belle et rare édition’ (1892 Borghese sale catalogue). Born at Constantinople, he was educated in Florence and obtained the patronage of Lorenzo de Medici to whom the epigrams are dedicated. The word 'Colubris' in the colophon appears to have been originally printed 'colubri' but changed by stamping 's' over the full stop. Of the 10 incunable editions attributed to this press, this is believed to be the earliest. HC(+Add) 10880*; BMC VI 691; BSB-Ink M-243; Bod-inc M-141; GW M21494; Goff M-342; ISTC im00342000.

Chancery quarto (211 x 135mm). 96 leaves. (Some minor marginal spots and dampstains.) 19th-century dark green half roan over grained-paper boards (extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance: marginal annotation on g6v giving a correction to the text based on the 1582 Paris edition – Marc Anton Borghese (1814-1886; bookplate, lot 45 in the Borghese library auction 3 May 1892 with note on rear pastedown recording purchase).
