C'est René Char qui, au printemps 1946, sollicite Matisse pour la réalisation d'un frontispice pour ce recueil. L'éditeur se méprenant d'abord sur la nature de l'illustration, Matisse insiste sur le fait qu'il s'agira bien d'une gravure originale tirée à 65 exemplaires, et non d'une reproduction : "mon intention est de manifester à René Char plus qu'un simple hommage, et si le livre est accompagné d'une gravure originale, d'un tirage très limité, j'espère que René Char bénéficiera d'avantages réels" (lettre à Max-Pol Fouchet, 17 février 1947). Le visage représenté par Matisse sur la gravure en frontispice est celui de Lucienne Bernard, veuve du poète Roger Bernard, auquel l'auteur rend hommage dans le onzième poème du recueil intitulé "Affres, détonation, silence".

Un des 65 exemplaires de tête sur vélin pur fil Johannot à la forme (n° XXXIII), signés par l'auteur, les seuls accompagnés d'une gravure originale signée de Henri Matisse en frontispice. Comme toujours, report de la gravure sur la page de titre. Quelques brunissures à la couverture.

After opening it, select the desired auction from the list, enter and view the current status of the interested lot.
The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. In the near future you will find detailed information for each case in the section "Auction information" on the page of the auction catalog and the lot.
Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
