MICHEL-FRANÇOIS DANDRÉ-BARDON, MINERVA AND MARS BATTLING, RED AND BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BLACK INK, WATERCOLOUR AND BODYCOLOUR
This brightly coloured work displays a favoured graphic technique of the artist from Aix-en-Provence, who belonged to the so-called ‘generation of 1700’. Writing about another such drawing depicting Soldiers holding torches in the Graphische Sammlung, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (inv. 1823), Pierre Rosenberg explains: ‘Following a habit he maintained throughout his career, Dandré-Bardon glued a piece of paper […]. It probably covers a first sketch with which the artist was not satisfied’ (Cahier du dessin français, no. 12, Michel-François Dandré-Bardon, Paris, 2001, no. 4, ill). In the present work, the artist has added a piece of paper at the top centre of the composition, and redrawn on it the three tops of the tents that populate the battlefield in the background.
Described as one of the most brilliant and fertile artists of his times (Rosenberg, op. cit., 2001, p. 7), Dandré-Bardon liked to mix techniques boldly, as here, where watercolour and bodycolour are blended with red and black chalk and pen to enliven the composition. A drawing using the same technique and colour range, depicting Venus giving arms to Aeneas, was shown at Colnaghi in New York (Old Master Drawings, 1987, no. 47, ill).
