Further details
NICOLAS DE LARGILLIERRE (1656-1746), PORTRAIT OF A MAN TRADITIONNALLY SAID TO BE CHARLES DE TUBIÈRES DE GRIMOARD DE CAYLUS (1687-1750), HALF-LENGTH, OIL ON CANVAS
Nicolas de Largillierre (1656-1746) was one of the greatest French painters of eighteenth century. Mainly, but not exclusively, a portraitist, he also excelled in still life and history painting. More audacious than many of his contemporaries, he employed bright colours and swirling lines in his works, liberating the art of portraiture in France. He revealed his sitters' personalities through the vigor of his pictorial technique and the inventiveness of his compositions. His training in both England and Flanders gave him the culture and open-mindedness needed to develop his talent, which was soon recognized by the greatest artists of his time. A painter of the Parisian aristocracy, generous and sensitive, his lively, delicate and innovative works appeal to a wide audience. It is the small details in his paintings that bring them to life, such as the dust from the gentleman's wig that can be seen on his shoulders in the present painting, or the rich floral silk lining the lady's cloak seen in the following lot.
This portrait is believed to be of Charles de Tubières de Pastel de Levoy de Grimoire, marquis de Caylus (1698-1750), a French naval officer who was governor-general of the French Windward Islands from 1745 to 1750. However, his life was not entirely blameless, he dissipated a huge fortune and was deeply in debt when he took office. This led to a number of illegal trading deals with both the English and Dutch, France's enemies at this time. His financial situation was not helped when a young Frenchman arrived in Martinique, pretending to be Caylus, who spend a considerable about of his money before being found out as an imposter!
