PHILIPPE-AUGUSTE HENNEQUIN (LYON 1762-1833 LEUZE)Les Martyrs de prairialsigné 'Hennequin' (en bas vers la gauche)plume et encre noire, lavis gris sur six feuilles de papier assemblées59,4 x 85,3 cm (19 7⁄8 x 33 5⁄8 in.) Provenance Vente Christie's, Paris, 15 novembre 2006, lot 197. Post lot text PHILIPPE-AUGUSTE HENNEQUIN, THE MARTYRS OF PRAIRAL, PEN AND BLACK INK, GREY WASH ON SIX JOINED SHEETS OF PAPERThis drawing is a study for a painted composition, lost or left finished, documented by further four drawings in the collections of the University Library of Liège (inv. 2145 & inv. 2199; J. Benoit, Philippe-Auguste Hennequin, Paris, 1994, D. 306 et 308), the Decorative Arts Museum of Lyon (inv. 3075 ; Op. cit., D. 307), and the Carnavalet Museum, Paris ((inv. D.14900). The present drawing is identical in composition to the latter, which stands as the most finished version. In 1831, Hennequin participated in a competition organised by Louis-Philippe with a view to celebrate the act of bravery showed by Boissy d’Anglas, made ‘Pair de France’ during the Restauration period. In fact, a pen and ink study by Hennequin records the moment when Boissy d’Anglas greets Feraud’s head after he was killed by the Sans-Culottes on 20 May 1795 (private collection, New York, op. cit., D. 305). Hennequin, proud Republican, might have intended to conceive a pendant more aligned with his ideals and chose to depict the Martyrs of Prairial, a large painting that would have measured 5.2 x 3.2 m according to his inscriptions.
